out of the fog
written in Germany, 1991

after I have left my first marriage I dream

that I have been driving in the fog

when the fog lifts
I realize that I am on a narrow mountain road
a steep abyss drops off to one side
no railing to protect the cars from falling down

I cannot turn the car around
so I drive backwards
carefully
frightened
wondering how I drove along that street—in the fog
so close to the abyss
amazed that I did not fall into that depth—to die

I make it back to the main street
now I can turn my car around
to drive forward again

I enter the main street
and join the flow of traffic

I am reunited with life
